Majority of terrorists in Sinai arrested: source

A rare calm hung over security forces deployed across North Sinai on
Saturday. Authorities have not witnessed a single attack in the last two
days there.

Since the overthrow of Islamist President Mohamed Morsy on 3 July, almost
daily attacks rocked the lawless peninsula, killing army troops, police
officers and civilians.

A security source meanwhile told Al-Masry Al-Youm the latest calm can be
attributed to the fact the "majority" of terrorist elements in the Sinai
have been arrested.

Those arrested, the source said, implicated other terrorist and criminal
elements in the region, including those responsible for attacks against the
army and police.

Palestinians, Syrians and Afghans, as well as Egyptians, were reportedly
arrested on charges of attacking security forces, and are being detained in
Cairo, the source claimed.

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Friday announced the arrest of a mother who had allegedly abducted her daughter in 2005 and fled to Mexico.

Burbank police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said Gabriela Barrett was arrested Wednesday while returning to the country.

The 53-year-old woman allegedly admitted to fleeing, reportedly telling authorities she was trying to protect the child from the child’s father whom she alleged was verbally abusive.

The arrest was made with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel.

“At the time of the incident, police determined the mother and daughter were somewhere near Tijuana, Mexico, but were unable to locate the pair, even with the help of Mexican law enforcement authorities,” Ryburn said, adding that Burbank Police Detective Dave Kleinfeld never gave up searching for the child.

According to Ryburn, the detective recently located an adult son of Barrett and through her son, started communicating with Barrett.

“Detective Kleinfeld made arrangements with United States Customs and Border Protection for Gabriela to surrender at the border crossing,” Ryburn said.

Barrett was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of maliciously concealing a child from a lawful custodian. She is being held on $40,000 bail.

The child, now 11, was interviewed by officials from the Department of Child and Family Services and released to a family member, Ryburn said.

Ex-LA County GOP Party Exec Arrested For Allegedly Sending Teen Sexually Explicit Messages

BURBANK (CBS/AP) — A former executive director of the Republican Party of Los Angeles County (RPLAC) was arrested Friday for allegedly sending sexually explicit messages to a 16-year-old girl.

Scott Hounsell, 30, was booked on two misdemeanor counts of sending harmful matter to a child, Los Angeles police Lt. Andrea Grossman said. The girl told detectives Hounsell sent her sexually explicit chat messages on a social media website. Hounsell is being held on $40,000 bail.

According to his LinkedIn page, Hounsell has been a field representative and internship coordinator for California state Assemblyman Cameron Smyth.

Jonathan Wilcox, a spokesman for the county’s official Republican organization, said Hounsell resigned June 15.

“Scott Hounsell is a former employee of RPLAC who resigned on June 15th. Until we were contacted by the LAPD today, we had absolutely no knowledge of any information relating to this case. We take this issue very seriously and will fully cooperate with law enforcement any way we can,” he said.

The arrest was made by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force — one of 61 local and federal task forces nationwide that focuses on online child victimization.

Hounsell’s Granada Hills neighbors were stunned about the allegations, saying he and his wife were friendly.

“He’s very nice. He’s very friendly,” said Celia Satamian. “He has two kids, he talks to all his neighbors.”

Calls to Hounsell and his family were not immediately returned.
